You may have stumbled across this when looking for something else, in which case I can only apologise.

These pictures are here for my friends and, in a couple of cases, to illustrate a point I'm making on the dpreview forum.

BTW, nearly all the pictures have been reduced to 1024 x 768 to make them small and, to make the download even quicker, I have compressed them rather a lot. Not, I hope, that you'll notice. Send an e-mail if you are misguided enough to want to view the originals which vary in size up to about 14 MB or more...

Leica Lenses : A scan of the booklet "The Interchangeable Leica Lenses" dated October 1937. Not as good as I would wish but the booklet is over 70 years old and the paper is becoming very brittle. So I was unable to press it flat down during the scans.

There are also some scans of advert's from that period and another booklet.

Olympus Kit Lenses : I get tired of hearing recommendations on forums for Canon and Nikon. I use both makes and others and think that the Olympus kit lenses offer a lot higher quality than people would expect. So here are some samples. They were all taken with the telephoto zoom from the two lens kit. That means 40 to 150mm (80 to 300mm in 35mm film terms) and f/3·5 to f/4·5 at the widest.

People who think you need high ISO settings for fast moving objects should look at the EXIF and also bear in mind that for the pictures of aircraft the camera was hand held.

All the pictures show jpg's just as they came out of the camera; an Olympus E-500
.

Olympus mju-II : Sample pictures taken with the Olympus mju-II, which was probably the last 35mm P&S with a fixed focal length lens made by them. It was made from 1996 onwards and a special edition was made in 1998. These a good but brief list of models and dates for Olympus cameras here: http://zuserver2.star.ucl.ac.uk/~rwesson/esif/om-sif/camhistory/camhistory.htm

Best viewed as the "Large" size. Scanned by Tesco's so only about 2 megapixels.

Wide Angle Problems : A set of three photo's to show what I dislike about wide angles. The picture was taken with a Panasonic LX2 on the 10 megapixel 16:9 settings. For obvious reasons I've changed it to fit 1024 x 568 (a typical monitor screen and much faster to load).

France 2 : These are some snaps taken during a short holiday in France. As usual, when we got back from our holiday there were a lot of problems waiting for us and so I've not found the time, yet, to put captions on all the pictures here. With luck and a fair wind I'll get it sorted out soon but it might be best to look again in mid-September and then early October, by which time I may have added the captions. Sorry about that, David

PS The pictures have been made a lot smaller and compressed to fit the computer screens and so won't print very well as shown here but I'd be happy to print copies from the originals. Just send an e-mail to iDRH@tesco.net and I'll be in touch.

Tall Ships at St Malo, France : Not my best pictures; the place was jammed solid with people and photographers fighting for a good position. And so most of my shots were grabbed whenever I got the chance and with little time to think and even less time to compose the shot.

Low Light & Noise : People get wound up about low light and noise. I prefer the classic approach of f/2 or so, ISO 100 and a bit of technique. All these shots were taken with the camera on the "P" setting at ISO 100. They were handheld and I was taking a lot of pictures to get the atmosphere after the airshow, when the old 'planes are put back in the hangers. BTW, to get the pictures at slow shutters speeds you need to watch what people do. In all of these shots the 'planes were moved slowly forwards, then backwards until in the right place. The pictures were taken as they paused before going in the opposite direction.

An old P&S : All taken with a Fujifilm MX-1500 which received rave reviews when it was announced in May '99. Put here to show what we thought was brilliant in those days and almost as good as my large (heavy) digital SLR.

Only a 1/2.2" CCD and a non-zoom lens (38 mm equivalent on 35 mm film). And I got a 4 MB Smart Media card with it and a set of rechargeable batteries.

The pictures were taken at the Great Central Railway, which is a length of preserved (restored) main line track, several restored and one new station etc in Leics. I like steam locomotives, btw.

Another P&S : A few photo's taken with an Olympus µ 300 (or Stylus 300) camera and put here to show what can be done with a "point & shoot". BTW, I ignore the menu and leave the thing on "Program Auto" which saves messing around with the menu.
