18th Century Military Model of Fortified Town
In the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille, is a large collection of 18th century military models of fortified towns along the French and Belgian border. They were used to plan defence etc and, for the detail to be appreciated, have to be seen. They could be taken apart for transport and use in the field and measure about 10 to 15ft, or more, across.
Because of their age and fragile condition they are displayed in semi darkness, hence the poor photograph.
The (real and full size) Citadel at Lille, by Vauban, is well worth a visit.
